SMILEY
1. The Day Z100 (a radio station in new york city) Called and asked to send an “aircheck” tape for a job. I was 18 - just graduated high school. I my family in good ‘ol Iowa to take the job within a few weeks.
2. The Day my grandfather passed away. He had a stroke. I was so sad – I look at life differently and realize how precious life is.
3. The day I didn’t get married. (I was engaged) If I would have married Jessica out in San Diego – I wouldn’t be were I am today. maybe I’d be at some suck job doing nights at a crappy top 40 station. Instead I took a job out in Phoenix -that led me where I am today
4. The Day I purchased my home here in Indianapolis. A lot of commitment for me and I think I kind of grew me up a bit. (just a bit)
5. The day I purchased my camper. I love camping and being out in the nature!
KJ
1. July 20, 1990 — My twin brother and sister were born. My sister Kayla immediately became my best friend.
2. March 13, 1993 — I went to the grocery store for my mom and our local radio station, KLYV was doing a live broadcast. I met the program director there and he offered me my first radio job. I wouldn’t be on the Smiley Morning Show or any show if I hadn’t gone to the store that day.
3. February 3, 2001 — The day I met Patrick at the Elks Lodge. TOTAL AWESOMENESS!!
4. May of 2002 - When Smiley moved here. I never thought I would be in morning radio.
5. March 10, 2008 — The day my dad died. Not only is the most grief I ever experienced but I’ve also experienced so much kindness not only from people I’m close to but also from complete strangers. It’s changed how I view everything.
BMOORE
1. Mid April 2002. Smiley was in town, interviewing for the morning show opening. Scott, myself and some other staff members went to dinner with Smiley, then we went to OPT's in Broad Ripple. I knew right there that he was going to get the job, and I wanted to produce the show. A month later, he signed on and I came in every morning at 4:00am, putting in clips and basically produce the first two hours of the show, then I would go back home to bed, get up and come back and do my promotions job. The work paid off when I was hired to produce the show that fall.
2. June 2002. I was going through a rough time in my previous relationship, due to working non-stop and not paying enough attention to details at home. Long story short, Toni and I became close friends, and months after my old relationship ended, we started dating the next spring.
3. October 7th, 1984. Any Cubs fan will tell you that this is a "black" day in their lives. It was my first year following baseball and the Cubs. The Cubs had a dream season in 1984, made the playoffs for the first time in 39 years and had a 2-0 lead in the NLCS, back then, it was a best of five format, so they only needed to win one more game against the San Diego Padres to go to the World Series. One fucking game. The melted down and lost the last three games. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was 10/7/84. Pain from the beginning of my baseball watching life.
4. October 14th, 2003. The Cubs up in the NLCS 3-2, taking on the Florida Marlins, Mark Prior is dominating the game, Cubs up 3-0, with 5 outs to go for their first trip to the World Series since 1945. Luis Castillo hit a fly ball down the left field line, Cubs left fielder Moises Alou seems to have a shot at catching the ball, but fan Steve Bartman reaches out to catch the ball, which is in foul territory. Alou misses the ball, keeping the at-bat and inning going. Florida scored 8 runs in the next inning and a half, the Cubs lose that game, and Game 7, and the biggest disappointment in my life to date. This was the time I realized the Cubs would never win anything important again, and I would NEVER let myself get caught up like that again.
5. December 20th, 1997. I graduated from Ball State University. The night before, I pulled my first airshift on WZPL - midnight to 8am. Drove Straight from the station to Muncie, fell asleep in my chair during the ceremony.
PAUL POTEET
1. First day I worked at WMEE in Ft. Wayne. It was my first taste of the Big Time, because it was THE station, other than WOWO, in the market, and the big one for any one under 30. Plus the first night I worked there, I met Mrs. Poteet, and this particular teen age DJ got an instant crush, among other things.
2. The day me and Mrs. P. hiked Pikes Peak and I almost passed out from the walk and the thin air, and the fact that we didn't bring enough water. I thought I was going to hurl from 14 thousand feet, but we both made it through.
3. When I put Studio B on the air back in the early 90's. ISDN stuff is common now, but I did a daily afternoon drive show for a radio station in Lafayette in an arrangement that was novel for the time. It established a "format" for me of multiple jobs and freelance stuff that has worked out well.
4. The day I laid eyes upon David Scott Smiley in May of 2002. (I came to the studio the first morning he was on. Ray and Martha had done a remote earlier in the morn.) We clicked immediately, and fell in mad radio love. He saved my morning drive ass and re-energized my performances. I get more response from the Smiley show than anything else I am involved in. When I get my own morning radio show I will send him a commission.
5. May of 2006 when I got Lasik'd at Muncie Eye Center. I had worn glasses or contacts since the 3rd grade and I'm still amazed by the freedom I have now.
MINDY WINKLER
1. May of 2001 - Getting the call that I got the Commander KC job. It was my break back into full-time on-air broadcasting and a job that I had coincidentally said back in college that I was going to go for if it ever came open (plus it got me away from a job I was hating!! :))
2. October of 1995 - The night John and I went to the movie "Seven" - just two days prior he'd taken back his apartment key and said he wanted to 'slow things down' - basically breaking up with me (after I'd JUST given him the denim shirt he'd been asking for - yes, all my friends thought he was a jerk ;p). I coerced him into going to that movie with me (after much struggle mind you cause he was being an ass) but since I didn't know anyone else in town and I really wanted to see it. Mid-way thru the movie he grabbed my hand and says he realized he didn't know why he'd been pushing me away and that I was "the one" -- he was whipped after that ;p hahaha
3. March 12th, 2004 - The first night home from the hospital with Garrett. I couldn't sleep cause I didn't want to stop rocking him while watching him sleep. I was so overwhelmed & didn't want to miss a second of his new little life! (and I hadn't really got a chance to "enjoy" him in the hospital with all the problems I'd had trying to breastfeed)
4. May of 1998 - When I made Colts Cheerleader the first time. It was my 3rd time to try out (after a heartbreak the year before making it to the VERY LAST cut). This had been a dream of mine since the Colts arrived in 1984 (when I was 13). I had worked my butt off that year to get in better shape and improve my dance technique. I was bouncing off the walls and called the WHOLE family!! ;)
5. May of 1989 - My senior year in high school when I found out my very best friend had went behind my back to select another friend of ours to be roommates with at IU. That (and the bonus that my parents offered to do all my laundry & I got several vocal performance music scholarships) convinced me to transfer my information to Ball State -- of course I ended up changing to broadcasting my sophomore year. ;p
WEEDMAN
1. July 24th, 2005 – “The Accident”. Only a couple days after I proposed to Liz, we were driving back from Iowa, and a semi clipped us on I-70 and sent us in a tailspin causing us to flip 5 times. I walked away with a few broken ribs but saw how much I loved Liz and how much I wanted to get married.
2. November 18th, 2002 – “My First day working at Dr. Tavel”. The first day I started working at Dr. Tavel was also my first “9-5” job. When I was driving into work, I listened to Smiley and heard how fun it sounded to be in radio. From that day on, all I wanted to do was radio and I applied for an internship and got it and that’s how I got where I am today.
3. August 10th, 2002 – The First day I met Liz. I had met Liz through her friend in an AOL chat room and she mentioned to me she had a friend which she wanted me to meet. We finally figured out a date and went bowling and Liz and I instantly clicked. I was really nervous at first but after I bowled a strike, Liz leaned in and said “good job” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I think she knew I was nervous and was trying to “break the ice”.
4. My Sophomore Year High School / 1996 – The First day I Got a Job. If you think I’m quiet and shy now, you should have seen me before I got my first job. I gained a lot of my courage and “people” skills from working at “Hollywood Video” and even became the #1 sales person in the company, selling over $50,000 in Gift Certificates during the Holidays.
5. April 21st, 2007 – This is the first day we moved into our house. From that point on, I’ve been working on it almost once a week and have learned a lot of building skills and fell in love with working on the house. |
