Right now, a pack of 20 cigarettes in Indiana comes with a tax of about 96 cents… But that may change soon. According to Fox59, there is a push to raise the tax to around $2 per pack. Double may seem like a big increase but the American Lung Association of Indiana says that the change must be significant enough to stand up to special promotions and coupons.
Those in support of the tax increase are hoping that raising the overall cost of smoking will deter people from taking up the habit while encouraging current smokers to quit. The extra tax money could potentially go toward “tobacco prevention and education efforts.”
One smoker shares her take on this possible change on Fox59.
