Remember Zayn from One Direction? I barely do either. So maybe this rant about the Grammys was more about bringing him back into relevancy rather than the Grammys themselves which would make a lot more sense.
Zayn went off on the Academy yesterday, tweeting, “[Eff] the Grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary.”
Please note: he’s not even eligible for a Grammy this year. His latest album “Nobody Is Listening” came out this past January which was five months after eligibility ended and two months after the nominees were announced so it won’t be up for consideration until next year’s ceremony.
It’s not clear if he knew that, but in a follow-up Tweet he said, “My tweet was not personal or about eligibility but was about the need for inclusion and the lack of transparency of the nomination process . . .And the space that creates and allows favoritism, racism and networking politics to influence the voting process.”
Maybe he did know he wasn’t eligible this year, and this was just a general rant about being ignored year after year. After three solo albums, he only has one nomination, and it wasn’t even for one of his own songs. It was for “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” which he performed with Taylor Swift for the “Fifty Shades Darker” soundtrack (they lost).
Either way, if the Academy doesn’t want it, I will gladly take that basket of confectionary.
